The unique annual “Wax Candle Procession and Merit Making on Elephants Back” celebration takes place in Surin province to mark the start of the rainy season and the beginning of the three month long Buddhist Lent. On the first day of the two day festival, exquisitely-carved candles from 12 famous temples in Surin are paraded through the town along with a colourful procession of Surin-style folk dancers. There is also a magnificent procession of 87 elaborately-adorned elephants.
