The biggest charity event of the year in Thailand is the annual Elephant Polo. This year it took place at the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort. The event has so far raised over $1 Million to help elephant conservation projects in Thailand. The elephants used in the match are street elephants or ones that “perform” for tourists. They are well taken care of during the event, given lots of food, medication and rest. They are only allowed to play for 28 minutes per day. If they don’t want to play, they are immediately swapped. Even the mahout’s hook is wrapped in plastic tape. Overseeing the match was elephant conservationist John Roberts who made sure no harm was done to the elephants.
