Maeklong Railway “Folding Umbrella” Market

Folding Umbrella Market

It used to be billed as “Unseen Thailand”, but I think these days if you haven’t been there yourself, you have definitely seen photos of this market on the railway tracks in Samut Songkhram. Eight times every day, the market vendors have to move back their goods and close their umbrellas in order to let the Maekong-Ban Laem train pass. This has been going on for quite a few years now, but it is still unique for the tourists who flock here to see this unusual market for themselves. Trains arrive at Maeklong Station at 8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 5.40 p.m., and depart the station at 6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. To get here from Bangkok, catch the train to Mahachai from Wong Wian Yai Station. Then, in Samut Sakhon, cross the river by boat and get back on the train at Ban Laem Station. If you miss the last train back, there are plenty of buses and minivans that go to Bangkok.

I heard about this place for a year, but don’t have a chance to go there 🙁
Maybe I will visit this market next weekend after midterm examination!
