The Vegetarian Festival in Thailand takes place for about nine to ten days in the ninth lunar month. It’s also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival and is celebrated by Chinese descendants in South East Asian countries. All Chinese communities in Thailand take part in this festival but the most famous version is in Phuket where devotees impale themselves with knives and basically any household items. The main event in Bangkok takes place in Chinatown and it is far more family friendly there. As well as eating vegetarian food you can observe a number of parades that are organized by each shrine. During just one visit to Chinatown in Bangkok I came across three different parades. All great fun with the dancing dragons and firecrackers.
